A 30-year-old male from Minga Payam, Mundri East County, Western Equatoria State, who currently resides in the Miri-Kalanga area of Mundri West County had to share on a significant personal and interpersonal conflicts he encountered in 2024.
“A group of youths attacked me on social media. They insulted me based on my career, ethnic culture, and family background, which created tremendous emotional distress in me. The situation escalated to the point where it almost led to violent conflict between my followers and them. However, during that difficult time, it was a fortunate to me and those youths when Christian Organization for Sustainable Society (COSS) engaged us jokingly to mediate between us. COSS peace builder helped me to understand conflict resolution, reconciliation, and the importance of forgiveness. This taught me how to forgive and live peacefully with my friends and fellow community members. I then gave myself to work together with COSS as a volunteer for peace and trauma healing activities and ensured that I am always present in all of their trainings. After that, I became a peace ambassador in Mundri, committed to promoting peace and understanding wherever and whenever I see need to bring peace between two or more people".
“I sincerely appeal to COSS and its partners to continue with efforts in peacebuilding and trauma healing across South Sudan. Our country need such interventions which is why it is still struggling with conflicts that affect various aspects of our lives. It is crucial that organizations like COSS who work directly with the communities are supported by donors so as to continue to engage youth and women groups, traditional and community leaders, churches and government leaders at all level in trainings for peace and trauma healing and education. I believe Only through this ongoing commitment we can hope to foster peace and build a brighter more harmonious future for all”. A 35 years old South Sudanese married woman and a mother of five who lives in Hai-Tiriri Residential Area shared her stressful history which she passed through for years.
“Since I got married, I have never enjoyed my marriage. My husband is someone who takes alcohol which makes him not to act as a responsible person at home to carter for the family needs like paying children’s school fees, medication, even to building a house. Before joining Christian Organization for sustainable Society (COSS) woman group, my life was so hard in a way that I could not be able to have a good sleeping time at night and if it’s in a day time, as I wanted to cook, I sometimes end up forgetting what I wanted to do. I would sit down twice thinking to reimagine what I wanted to do before doing anything.
But when I joined COSS woman group, my life changed and I have now been taught on how to manage my stress. I am now feeling minimum stress because I have now come to understand that, I am not alone in such situation but what matters is how one handles is.
“I am really grateful with COSS in what they are doing, because it has help me and my family. If it wasn’t COSS, I don’t think I would be alive by now. Now I am doing my small business which keeps me busy and helping my family, and pray to God so that He can change my husband to a better person in the community.
I am therefore, calling on them to continue with such teaching so that it can help our community to manage their stress and also let COSS extend this program to other parties of Greater Mundri. I know there are other women who are also suffering if not like me, then more than me there, who have not got such trainings to help themselves”. Says one of the women in Hai Tiriri in Mundri West County who chose for his name and picture not to be disclosed..
